Is epoxy resin toxic
2022-11-04
The epoxy resin E44 we often use has not been checked for toxicity, but from the experience of use, it can be considered as basically non-toxic unless taken orally; There is no visible damage in skin contact. After finishing the work, rub it off with hot water or wash it off with acetone; As for steam inhalation, it has not been heard that E44 can be heated into steam. Moreover, epoxy is amorphous, and there is no fixed liquefaction and gasification temperature. If the temperature is too high, it will decompose and carbonize.
That is not the toxicity of epoxy itself. The toxicity of epoxy in construction and use mainly comes from diluents and curing agents. The commonly used diluents, ethanol and acetone, are non-toxic in themselves, but have anesthetic effects. They are extremely flammable and must be ventilated. In principle, xylene is non-toxic and also has anesthetic effects. However, it is said that the raw materials left in the production process of low-quality xylene are toxic, and the taste is particularly disgusting. Low molecular weight epoxy can also be considered non-toxic; Amines commonly used as curing agents are usually toxic and even have a pungent smell. However, the ratio of epoxy and amine curing agents is usually very broad. When they are stirred evenly, they will generally undergo cross-linking reaction with few residues.
In most cases, the drinking water pools in our communities, schools, shopping malls, and governments are all made of epoxy resin for corrosion protection, and can pass the national standard testing, so the cured epoxy resin is non-toxic.
