Recently, a European Commission legislative proposal proposed to add tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A) and medium chain chlorinated paraffins (mccps) to the EU ROHS restricted substances list.
As early as March, 2021, Oeko Institut e.V. has released the final assessment report of pack 15. In the report, 7 substances including tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A) and medium chain chlorinated paraffins (mccps) were assessed, and it was finally recommended that tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A) and medium chain chlorinated paraffins (mccps) be included in the list of restricted substances in Annex II of RoHS, because these two substances have significant exposure risks to workers, consumers and the environment. The common uses of the substance and the limits recommended in the assessment report at that time are as follows:
No | Material | Recommended Limits | Common Uses |
1 | Medium Chain Chlorinated Paraffins MCCPs(C14-17) EC: 287-477-0 CAS: 85535-85-9 | The concentration of mccps in homogeneous material shall not exceed 0.1% by weight | Plasticizers and flame retardants in PVC materials; Flame retardants in rubber and polymers such as polyurethane, polysulfide, acrylic acid and butyl sealant |
2 | Tetrabromobisphenol A TBBP-A EC: 201-236-9 CAS: 79-94-7 | In homogeneous materials, the addition amount shall not exceed 0.1% by weight; Exempt TBBP-A for reactive type in FR4 epoxy glass sheet PCB. | As the precursor of reactive flame retardant for the production of bromine based epoxy resin printed circuit boards; It is also used as a flame retardant additive for thermoplastic components, such as ABS plastic housings |
Previously, EU ROHS increased from 6 to 10, as follows:
Restricted Substances | Limit (mass fraction) |
Pb | 0.1% |
Hg | 0.1% |
Cd | 0.01% |
Cr VI | 0.1% |
PBB | 0.1% |
PBDE | 0.1% |
DEHP | 0.1% |
BBP | 0.1% |
DBP | 0.1% |
DIBP | 0.1% |
